“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”

Reading is probably one of the most important skills that anyone can master. It is found in all subject areas and can be a lifelong hobby. Like any skill, reading takes practice. We teach reading at school, but practice needs to continue outside of the classroom. Children go to baseball practice, football practice, soccer practice, and some play they favorite video games. All of this time helps to develop their skills in those areas. Reading is a skill that also needs to be practiced.
One of the best ways to encourage reading is to allow the children to select their own books that they can enjoy. Reading expands the mind, vocabulary, and is relaxing. It is fun to watch a student read a book and then share it with someone else.
I encourage my students to read and take quizzes on Reading Counts. I have found that this program is a tool that can improve a student's reading level. I have observed students raise their lexile by hundreds of points during the course of a school year.
You can help your student improve their reading lexile.
1. Encourage to read at least 20 minutes each evening.
2. Ask your child to retell the main events of the story or the most important details of a non-fiction text.
3. Make sure that your child is reading a book that is appropriate for their reading level and their age.
4. Let your child see you reading.
5. Make sure that your child has plenty of reading material. It is important that they read a variety of texts such as newspapers, magazines, recipes, and directions.
